Mitchell is located in Lawrence CountyIndiana, approximately eighty miles southwest of Indianapolis and sixty miles northwest of LouisvilleKentucky.  Established in 1853 along the north-south line of the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway, Mitchell is currently home to a population of approximately 4,300 residents who enjoy the friendly small town charm that prevails throughout the community.

Mitchell is the birthplace of Gus Grissom, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts who died in the Apollo 1 accident in 1967.  The town has been selected as the site of the future Indiana Space Complex that will feature a museum store, library, observatory, campgrounds, and information center when completed.

Mitchell is home to a host of opportunities for recreation and entertainment.  Located just to the east of town is Spring Mill State Park, a 1,358-acre expanse of parkland featuring caves and sinkholes that can be toured via boat, courtesy of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, as well as several interpretative learning centers that include a settler village and nature center.

Mitchell is the proud home of the Persimmon Festival, a premier weeklong celebration held in downtown Mitchell that features live music, carnival rides, arts and crafts, games, contests, a 5K race, and the grand finale - the Grand Persimmon Festival Parade on the last day of the festival.

Easily accessible via State Route 37 and U.S. Route 50, Mitchell is a wonderful place to live or visit in southern Indiana!
